When ever we need to compare two analoge voltages and to find which one is greater or small the device comparator is used
A comparator is electronic device that compares two analog voltages and gives output . It gives output in digital form i,e 0s and 1s and is same about the voltage present on vcc pin of comparator
It has five pins two pins powering the device and other two pins are comparing pin which compares analog voltage i,e inverting pin and non inverting pin and finally one output pin which gives digital output
A comparator is made of high gain differential amplifier
Comparator is used in devices such as amplifier , to convert analog signal into digital ,as measuring device etc
The terminal with + sign indicates non inverting input and -signed terminal indicates inverting input
Working:
The output is high(1) if voltage on + terminal is heigher than on- terminal
I,e v out ={ 1,if +>-}
If voltage on non inverting terminal is lower than on inverting pin then output is 0
I,e v out ={ 0, if +<-}
EXAMPLE;
The led glows only when voltage is greater on non inverting input than inverting input
